Tips When Shopping for Window
Blinds
Window blinds do so much more
than just filter out light and provide privacy,
they also add to the overall design concept of
your home.
Blinds do a great job of allowing you to protect
your privacy, especially when you are in close
contact with your neighbors. You can add privacy
and style to any room by using blinds, but they
are especially great for those rooms where
privacy is most important such as your bathrooms
and bedrooms. Some people will really appreciate
the special sun blocking features available in
some blinds that allow your rooms to stay dark
even on the brightest of days. This feature is
especially helpful for those with young children
who will be more inclined to nap if the room is
darkened.
It is important to know all the options
available when it is time to purchase your
blinds. There are several different window blind
manufacturers, each with their own product line
to offer. You want to find a quality blind that
can stand up to years of use, opening and
closing, raising and lowering, so you can avoid
the expense of replacing them down the road.
Some people try to save money by purchasing the
least expensive blinds, only to find that they
spend more in the long run when those blinds
need to be quickly replaced.
There are a wide variety of blinds to choose
from, including: mini blinds that are usually
less than an inch in diameter, two inch wide
wooden or vinyl blinds, traditional roller
shades, pleated shades that do a great job of
diffusing the light in any room, and a new type
of blind that combines the look of a pleated
shade and the convenience of a mini-blind. You
want to carefully consider each type of blind,
and check to see how it fits in with your
overall window treatment budget.
The old standby when it comes to window
treatments is the traditional roller shade.
These blinds are usually the least expensive of
all your blind options, as well as being very
easy to both custom fit and install. When
installing roller shades in your bedroom you may
want to think about installing a special room
darkening roller blade to prevent light from
coming into the room. It is sometimes necessary
to install these roller blades in addition to
another type of blind. One thing it is important
to know about roller blades it that they are not
very durable, so they will probably need to be
replaced after a relatively short period of
time.
A staple in homes around the country for several
years is the mini blind. These lightweight
blinds are usually constructed from aluminum.
Some benefits of the mini blind are that they
are easy to install, even if you don’t have a
lot of help, and that they come in a rather wide
selection of colors. It should be no problem
finding a mini blind to match your rooms design.
While these blinds are relatively inexpensive,
they are also very vulnerable to bending and
breaking, which means you may need to replace
them before your budget is ready.
An option that continues to gain in popularity
is two inch wide wooden or vinyl blinds. While
these blinds give you added durability and
elegance, they also come with a larger price
tag. One benefit of using wooded blinds is that
you have the opportunity to custom match them to
blend in perfectly with any existing wood trim
or molding around your windows.
If you are looking for blinds that come in a
wide variety of colors and give you the
flexibility to work with just about any design
style you may want to consider pleated shades.
These window treatments are a great combination
of the look for pleated shades and the
functionality of mini blinds, giving any room a
softer look. Unlike mini blinds, however,
pleated shades can not be raised or lowered only
part way. You do, however, have the ability to
open and close them to allow extra light into
your room or block out the light and have
additional privacy.
