Decorating with Window
Blinds
Window blinds are gaining in
popularity for all types of decor, whether it be
home, office or commercial.
People often think of blinds as either
industrial or utilitarian window coverings. Some
of the features of blinds that have made them a
popular choice for offices and industrial
settings are that they are easy to clean and
durable, and give you the ability to set exactly
the amount of sunlight and privacy you desire.
They are gaining popularity for home
installations for exactly these qualities. The
only difference is that they need to be more
attractive for the home environment.
Types of Windows Blinds
Window blinds now come in a wide selection of
materials and finishes to please home owners and
decorators. To give blinds a warmer feel you can
also use decorative valances and curtains. Using
blinds you can now create window treatments that
are both contemporary and attractive. Blinds
come in a variety of styles. Some of the most
popular styles for the home market these days
include the following.
-
Venetian Blinds – While many Venetian blinds
are being constructed from plastic these days,
they are still most commonly made from aluminum.
They feature curved slates that range in width
from about one inch to three inches. The user
can vary the amount of light in the room by
opening them fully, closing them, or opening
them at a variety of angles. They can be
completely pulled to the top of the window to
give you an unobstructed view. You can find
these blinds in a variety of colors, and they
are very versatile. You can get complete privacy
in any room by tightly closing the slats.
-
Wood Slat Blinds – These are Venetian blinds
that have been constructed from wood. You will
have a thicker stack when these blinds are
pulled to the top of the window as the slats of
these blinds are thicker. You will find them
either painted or stained. As with other
Venetian blinds you can vary the amount of light
in the room by opening or closing the slats.
-
Mini Blinds – These blinds have really
increased in popularity over the last 20 years.
They are called mini blinds because of their
narrow slats which are usually either half an
inch or an inch wide. They come in a wide
selection of colors and are usually made from
wither PVC or aluminum. These blinds function
just like Venetian blinds, giving you the
ability to open and close the slats, as well as
pull the blind to the top of the window. They
will give your window a very smooth appearance
when they are closed.
-
Vertical Blinds – You will find these blinds
in both homes and offices, coving both windows
and sliding glass doors. When these blinds are
open you have the ability to pull them to one
side of the window or the other. A track is
installed along the top of the window or sliding
door on which the metal or PVC slats are hung.
Some styles of vertical blinds have all the
slats hanging loose, while others will connect
the slats at the bottom with a chain or cord.
There are even some models of vertical blinds
that allow the user to control them with a
remote control.
-
Woven Blinds – These blinds are different from
the ones described above in that they do not
feature slats that open and close. In these
models the narrow slats have been woven
together, allowing filtered sunlight to enter
through the spaces between the slats. If you
want more light, you can pull the cord and raise
the blind towards the top of the window. You
will find that Venetian blinds offer more
privacy than woven blinds.
